The Law on Labels

If you are artistic, designing and creating your own labels for your home produced honey can be a real pleasure, but whether you like it or not, there is some information that you are required by law to include on your labels if you wish to sell your honey.

  • The word HONEY must appear on the label.

    • If you wish to specify the flavour of honey, such as lavender or acacia, then the honey must contain at least 75% of that type of honey.

RAW HONEY indicates that the honey has not been pasteurised.

    • Filtered/unfiltered indicates how clear the honey is and how free from pollen and other substances it will be, as they are captured during the filtering process.

  • The amount of honey must be shown by weight e.g. 300g/10.5oz

  • You must include the country of origin, in our case Guernsey.

    • You may wish to also include the parish, as often people with allergies choose honey produced as close to their homes as possible, but this is not legally necessary.

  • You must include your name and address, partial address or postcode so that your honey can be traced back to you.

  • If you are selling your honey through a third party your labels must include a lot number.

  • You must have a Best Before date on the label, even with honey. We suggest a 2-5 year shelf life - although who can resist a jar of Guernsey honey for that long!

It’s a lot of information to fit on a little label, but it’s required before we can put out glorious, golden honey up for sale.
